La Berceuse

Among the five versions of his portrait of Augustine Roulin, Vincent van Gogh considered this canvas the finest, a judgment shared by the sitter herself. Painted between late 1888 and early 1889, the work belongs to the series titled La Berceuse, in which the rope held in Roulin’s hand alludes to a cradle just beyond view, evoking themes of comfort and maternal care.
